An interesting opportunity to acquire the former Grade 2 listed former Red Lion public house which has been sympathetically updated and improved by the current owners to make a characterful home.

Records show that there has been a pub on the site since 1740 but it is thought there was considerable rebuilding around 1825. The main building is brick and flint with part tiled elevation under a clay tile roof. Extended and altered over the years. The property is full of character features including an Inglenook fireplace, exposed timbers and a useful cellar.

The Red Lion has an interesting claim to fame, Ian Fleming the creator of James Bond was a resident of St Margaret’s Bay in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He based some of his stories around East Kent, both Moonraker and Goldfinger mention local landmarks including the Red Lion and the  Granville Hotel.  Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also based in and around St Margaret’s with the Old Windmill on the cliffe top and the infamous Goodwin Sands featuring in the original book.

The village of St Margaret’s at Cliffe offers local shopping, post office, doctor’s surgery with pharmacy, newsagent/general store, primary school (Ofsted rated as ‘outstanding’) and churches, whilst The Bay itself is sheltered for bathing, fishing, sailing etc.  The cliff top to either side of The Bay is mainly in the care of the National Trust and offers some delightful walks.  There are golf courses at nearby Kingsdown and Deal with St George’s at Sandwich (the venue of the British Open).  The Cathedral City of Canterbury offers an excellent shopping centre together with leisure interest, theatres and county cricket.   Excellent links to the continent via the Port of Dover, the Channel Tunnel and Eurostar from Ashford, London St Pancras 75 minutes from Martin Mill station (approx. 2 miles).
